The 2019/20 season at the Stahl proved to be an extraordinary mix of high drama,
political satire and modern takes on classic stories, along with some exciting collaborations between the Stahl
and the Music department. Highlights included Dario Fo’s seminal play Accidental Death of an Anarchist, the classic Ealing comedy
The Ladykillers, and another pupil-led piece; Tom Basden’s surprisingly comedic, yet ultimately chilling, Holes.
The classic fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty was brilliantly reimagined for Christmas,
using wonderful puppetry and featuring some impressive central performances, whilst
New House’s This Changes Everything, a pupil-directed production, was quite a change in style.
It was a highly contemporary play dealing with a wealth of prescient subjects – from belonging, to isolationism, to climate change.
Just two weeks later, the Stahl stage played host to Peter Shaffer’s epic tale, Amadeus.
The collaboration between the Drama and Music departments delivered a stunning production, rich in wonderful music and deft performances.
In March, the Stahl moved online with the Wontner masterclass and the annual Musical Theatre Competition taking place via Teams.
Whilst Covid-19 may have truncated the season, the seven productions staged demonstrated the great range of theatrical production on offer.
Contemporary and classical, comedy and tragedy, large cast and small cast, House
and School productions as well as cross-curricular projects all enriched the Stahl’s diverse programme.
The exceptional talents and obvious passion for music of all genres has been evident from the many events that have taken place this year.
From Chapel Choir performances on Sundays, to the 90s themed Guitar Madness Concert, to Music in Unexpected Places,
to Friday Nights with the Jazz Bands, to the annual House Singing Competitions,
Oundelians have delighted both physical and virtual audiences.
Remembrance Sunday saw 14 trumpeters disperse to our surrounding villages to perform the Last Post and Reveille while
the CCF Band led the parade magnificently on Remembrance Day through Oundle Town.
